Poet May Sarton said, “Revision is not going back and fussing around, but going forward into the process of creation.” In this class for writers of all genres, we’ll learn the difference between revision and editing; examine some of the key features of literary style; work on creating an individual voice; and explore a range of options when revising artistically. We’ll consider elegant variation, lexical repetition, rhythm, sound effects, concision, and position, showing examples of each in a variety of different writers’ styles. We’ll also take a look at five influential contemporary styles: minimalist, fancy, middle, oral, and amalgams. This class will up your game by demonstrating that revision is both an exquisite pleasure and an essential part of the creative process.

Luke Whisnant is a three-time winner of the East Carolina University English Department’s Excellence in Teaching Award. He is the author of six books and chapbooks, including In the Debris Field, which won the 2018 Bath Flash Fiction International Novella-in-Flash Award, and Watching TV with the Red Chinese, made into an independent film in 2012. His most recent book is The Connor Project, a novel (2022). He lives in Greenville, NC, where he edits the journal Tar River Poetry.
